Different languages pick different areas of reality to illustrate their meaning. I’ll explain. Different languages use different metaphors. What is a metaphor?
A metaphor is an image of something: a gesture, a description, a comparison of something with something else, anything that talks about the thing without calling it by its name.
To give you a didactically exaggerated example, to use a metaphor is to employ one colour to describe another. In the word “metaphor” there is the idea of a transfer. So you transfer the traits or effects of a colour to another. But why would any one do such a thing?
I tell you, we do this all the time. And we do it for a reason.
In using metaphors we humans show what our concerns are. Our concerns as a culture, as individuals, as actors of a particular time in history.
Imagine I keep using the colour blue to talk about red. You will soon suspect I have a distinct linking for blue. Perhaps I am from Planet Venus, where everyone is blue, me being blue myself. But the fact that I insist on blue keeps blue on my mind. And on yours.
Got it? The other day we were talking about a few metaphors in English that show a concern for changing the world. So I thought it would be interesting – and very revealing – to name to you these few metaphors that occurred to us.
I leave it to you to reflect on the actual consequences of a culture picking such a promising theme for a recurring conversation topic. Because, of course, the more you talk about something, the more real it gets. This is not necessarily so in the physical world, but in that of ideas and focus, yes. This is the magic of words. And thus English is now is spoken all over the world, by so many different cultures.

Uma metáfora é uma imagem de alguma coisa: um gesto, uma descrição, uma comparação de uma coisa com outra, o qur quer que seja que fale sobre a coisa sem chamá-la pelo nome que ela tem.
Para dar a você um exemplo didaticamente exagerado, usar uma metáfora é empregar uma cor para descrever uma outra. Na palavra “metáfora” há a ideia de uma transferência. Então você transfere os traços ou efeitos de uma cor para outra. Mas por que alguém faria isso?
Olha, fazemos isso o tempo todo. E por uma razão.
Ao usar metáforas nós humanos mostramos quais são os nossos focos, onde está nossa atenção. Como cultura, como indivíduos, como atores de um determinado momento na HIstória.
Imagine que eu fique usando a cor azul para falar sobre vermelho. Você vai logo suspeitar que eu tenho uma clara inclinação pelo azul. Talvez eu seja do planeta Vênus , onde todo mundo é azul, eu mesma o sendo. Mas o fato de eu insistir no azul mantem o azul na minha mente. E na sua.
Entendeu? Outro dia falávamos sobre algumas metáforas em inglês que mostram uma preocupação com mudar o mundo. Então pensei que seria interessante – e muito revelador – mencionar para você algumas dessas metáforas que nos ocorreram.

These are ideas of winning, of changing everything (the world is everything!) and of acting in a global scale.
Next time you wish to really effect something, try resorting to the right metaphors. Making fun or not, metaphors are a serious business. Which ones do you usually employ?
